Abu Dis, Wadi Nar (Container) Thursday, 21st July 2005, AMObservers: Meira A., Hana M., Littal Y. (reporting)6:30 – 9:007:10 – Wadi Nar. Both yellow gates are closed. The BP were sent to Gush Katif and are now replaced by soldiers from “Otef Yerushalayim” and a reserve unit. The change in atmosphere is noticeable. The soldiers are polite to the Palestinians and to us. It doesn’t erase the CP, but makes it just a little less unbearable. One of the reserve soldiers approaches us and praised the behaviour of his soldiers. We exchange views about the CPs – he thinks despite everything they are necesaary and as proof he says that last week they caught there 2 “real mevukashim” (wanted), (as opposed to 10 others defined as “mevukashim” by mistake).Pedestrian traffic is very little. Line of cars is no more than 5-6 in each direction. According to the soldiers residents from the North of the West bank are not allowed to go towards Hebron. On the way to Abu Dis we see from afar that there is a line of about 5 taxis in Al Ezariya, but no detainees.8:10 – Abu Dis – along the wall going to the settlement everything is quiet and deserted. Just as we pass a group of Palestinians at the hotel were given back their IDs and released – we don’t know how long they were there. At the gate at the bottom of the road where one of the bars was removed, Palestinians squeeze their way through. Up at the old pishpash and the monastery there are many soldiers, checking all passers by. A group of about 7-8 detainees were sitting near the monastery waiting for the usual form filling before they would get back their IDs and be sent back home. According to the detainees they had been waiting already 2 hours, according to the soldier no more than 20 minutes. It seems that these are always the same answers on both sides. One Palestinian from Hebron told us that yesterday all passengers in Wadi Nar were taken of the cars and checked by dogs, while today passage went freely. On the other hand yesterday he was let through in Abu Dis and today sent back though he claims he has a permit. He was told there is a closure.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
