We entered Hebron by way of Giv'at Gal – a number of ever increasing caravans near the industrial zone B of Kiryat Arba. The CP to Hebron, A area, was opened today. M. says that yesterday it was still shut.

The synagogue "Hazon David" is ruined and soldiers are watching.

At the way up Zir Zion, Abu Salah with his cart is unable to transfer fruit and vegetables to the grocery, because the road is blocked by an earth and junk mound. The Kfir soldiers keep watch.

We go up to the Beit Ha-Shalom. We stopped to exchange a few words with a well accessorized soldier who said to us "you aren't leftists, are you?"

There is an increased presence of soldiers in all the Shuhada and Tel Roumeida area. Their faces clearly indicate that they are watchful and that they meticulously survey the neighborhood.

The bend 160 checkpoint is being enlarged and overhauled. A crane lifts and places prefabricated watch-structures.

At Abed's shop there was a guide for Christian tourists. He knows Bethlehem well but not Hebron, so we explained to him the partition and structure of the quarter. The sight of the dozens of shut shops made him emit sighs of despair and sorrow. We mounted to Tel Roumeida and a soldier ordered us aggressively to make a turnabout immediately. At the Hebron Shiyuh intersection the passage is closed from both sides by big concrete cubes on which Israeli flags are painted.

The road which connects Hebron with Bani Na'im is closed. The is no passage. On the hill at the side of the road there is a pillbox with soldiers.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
      2. Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      3. The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      4. Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
      5. The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
      6. Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
      7. Tel Rumeida CP - guarding station
      8. Beit Hadassah CP - guarding station
