Hebron
Hebron stories
Today was the day of the of leffists who dare be the Arabs – a Jewess and an Arab. We both have Israeli identity cards. They did not let us enter the entrance to Kiryat Arba. The new guard Neriah delayed us for about fifteen minutes. We did not obey to him and continued on our way.
We went to meet Idris, who was stabbed by settlers yesterday while he was working in his plot. The soldiers came and separated him from them and there was a big story.
The soldiers are the 890 Battalion of the paratroopers and they have been in Hebron for only a week. Idris lived near the spring quite far from the eyes of the regular settlers in Hebron, and apparently the friction was between him and yeshiva students and not the local residents. Anyway, yesterday Idris’s son and two settlers were arrested and we came to express solidarity.
The soldiers delayed us for about an hour. They did not let us go up, and they did not want Idris to come down to us. They waited for the assess of the intelligence officer.
When it came he said: The area is very explosive and you contribute to this even more with your visit.
We gave the Idrises the phone numbers of lawyers and left.

The stairs to Idris’ house, where the soldiers forced us to descend.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
