| Afternoon

Abu Dis Sunday pm, November 28 2004Watchers: Tzipi E., Ronny P. a guest from Sweden- Uppsala Univ.It was difficult for us to see how people climbb all over the broken wall of the monasteryand the meaninglessness of this disturbance to the monastry garden. We took a transit to the container and were surprised by how easily the trafic flew, no detainees and the sense of ease and willingness to make things smoothe. But even under these “pleasant” circumstances we showed and explained our guest how the rules work.Back at the “pishpash” the man who owns the small stand and sells coffee, tea and sakhleb told us he came from Hebron and showed us that he has a 2 week permition to visit his daughter in the hospital. We gave him the phone number of Doctors for Peace and the Human rights line with the hope that extending a permit once given should not be impossible. He was so delighted that he refused money for the hot sakhleb for Petra.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
