Hebron and Southern Hills of Hebron, 24.9.07 06:45 – 10:45 AMObserving and reporting: Tsipi Z’ and Bella S. Sansana, 06:50: The two inspection posts were crammed with scores of workers. One inspection post was operating very slowly and the other one came to a complete standstill. People told us that they have been waiting for an hour and nothing happens. A soldier, who had been sent “to wave us away”, told that the computer was stuck. As we went over to the Israeli side of the CP (a matter of two minutes), all of a sudden the computer functioned and people started to come out. They told us that for an hour of their being inside the soldiers had been talking among themselves or on the phones and eating. On our way to Hebron we did not encounter special events. Hebron , 08:30: The town looked deserted, except for some settlers who built a Suka, opposite Beit Haddassa, beneath the Cordoba school. On our way back, after Ziv junction, we saw grafitti “Abigail” written on a huge carved boulder. Could there be a new outpost?

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
