Hebron – mourning the death of Abed our friend

| Morning

We went to Hebron. The main purpose was to console the family of our friend Abed. He died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest the week before.

On the way on Route 60, many IDF jeeps passed by. Further along the road near Samu’ and on the hill overlooking Qilqis, a soldier in a cement post and an Israeli flag waving.

At the entrance to Bani Naim, there was once again a manned position with 3 soldiers and an Israeli flag.

A different tension is felt.

In  Hebron

The city is full of placards and posters about its status and importance to the people of Israel are pasted on every wall and fence.

We arrived at the shop of Abed which faces the Muslim entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs.

Sad and strange to see the shop without his smiling face and his hearty welcome. Other people opened it this morning for the first time since he died.

I went to his family flat above the store. At home his wife sat with one granddaughter. We managed almost without speaking but we understood each other. In the absence of any knowledge of a common language, the language of the heart and the body speaks. He just wanted to live  with the Israelis without anger and without hatred despite his frequent encounters with the soldiers and settlers.

(Muhammed could not go in to translate because the widow sat alone with a man to accompany her).

We also decided to re-enter the Kafisha neighborhood and to go to our regular grocery store where there was a murderous attack about two months ago.

Now Golani brigade is in Hebron.

At the yellow checkpoint next to the turn to the road that goes up to the Givat HaAvot neighborhood and the house of Itamar Ben Gvir we found  the soldiers very stressed. It seems that they were instructed to expect trouble.

“Why  do you want to enter where it is dangerous especially for  you, lady.”

I explain to them that the grocery store and the surrounding area are very familiar to us and we visit it a lot. We convinced them that we were just going to say hello to our friend at the grocery store.

Well, they allowed us to pass.  When we arrived, I immediately entered the grocery store. Next to the pillbox, which has been manned ever since and is secured, the soldiers are standing outside. As soon as they saw us, they ran to the entrance of the grocery store.

Muhammad tells me that they would question him about who we are and that they would say that they have to  guard me.

Hurry up, he says, the soldiers are busy guarding you.

Well, then I quickly bought something, and  said hello to Mohammed who works in the store and I left.

The soldiers smile with relief and kept close  to the car until we moved off.

I greeted them and thanked them for looking after me.

The preparations  in the whole city are different either because there is a future fear of what is or because like many times here with the army, we are preparing for what has been. The vigilance is very noticeable in the whole area.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
      2. Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      3. The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      4. Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
      5. The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
      6. Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
      7. Tel Rumeida CP - guarding station
      8. Beit Hadassah CP - guarding station

    • South Hebron Hills
South Hebron Hills is a large area in the West Bank's southern part.
Yatta is a major city in this area: right in the border zone between the fertile region of Hebron and its surroundings and the desert of the Hebron Hills. Yatta has about 64,000 inhabitants.
The surrounding villages are called Masafer Yatta (Yatta's daughter villages). Their inhabitants subsist on livestock and agriculture. Agriculture is possible only in small plots, especially near streams. Most of the area consists of rocky terraces.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, many settlements have been established on the agricultural land cultivated by the Palestinians in the South Hebron Hills region: Carmel, Maon, Susia, Masadot Yehuda, Othniel, and more. Since the settlements were established and Palestinians cultivation areas have been reduced; the residents of the South Hebron Hills have been suffering from harassment by the settlers. Attempts to evict and demolish houses have continued, along with withholding water and electricity. The military and police usually refrain from intervening in violent incidents between settlers and Palestinians do not enforce the law when it comes to the investigation of extensive violent Jewish settlers. The harassment in the South Hebron Hills includes attacking and attempting to burn residential tents, harassing dogs, harming herds, and preventing access to pastures.

There are several checkpoints in the South Hebron Hills, on Routes 317 and 60. In most of them, no military presence is apparent, but rather an array of pillboxes monitor the villages. Roadblocks are frequently set up according to the settlers and the army's needs. These are located at the Zif Junction, the Dura-al Fawwar crossing, and the Sheep Junction at the southern entrance to Hebron.
