Huwwara
Huwwarra, Tuesday 13.6.2006, PMObservers: Fatchia, I . Galit H. (reporting)Natanya translating.14.05 -Great pressure at the pedestrian crossing. One detainee in the “jorra”, he says since 9.30 am. Because he has a sick child he wanted to go the quickest way and went through Awarta. (There is no sign forbidding entrance to the apartheid road even though we have asked time and again for this to be done). He was caught on the road and brought to Hawarra for punishment. R. who is the commander says “I know him and he has a permit but he makes problems.” An hour after we have approached the centre we are told that they have been informed that there is a lot of confusion at Hawarra and 10s of detainees and therefore they are not freeing him. Absolute nonsense. There are no other detainees and everything is moving swiftly. Miram at the centre promises to check and evidently takes us seriously. At 16.00 the police arrive and he is freed. It seems that R. must have been given a good talking to. After his release the man says the soldiers asked him for cigarettes and money (?!). Together with him another man who had been “hidden’ from us was freed…he had been inside the checkpoint on a small bench behind the checkpost to the right hand side…his documents were forged. (There is a complaint about the first detainee,. His name is M. A. S. from Hawarra …we do not have his id)There is great pressure and R. explains to us “patiently” that he only opens the humanitarian line when it “fills” up so that the regular lines should move quickly. But the truth is that the humanitarian lines fills up and there is no one to deal with these people. And so it goes on the entire shift. Soldiers shouting at one another the numbers of ids and exulting, and in the meantime screaming at those in line. Again and again we ask for the humanitarian line to be opened and this works and things go a bit faster. Some women who are waiting for children or relatives at the checkpoint are chased away by R. even though they beg not to have to wait in the sun and are not disturbing anyone. But he does not listen to their requests or to us. He wants a “sterile” checkpoint.18.00 At the end when we leave he bothers us with his requests for one of our badges which he wants so badly
