Huwwara, Thursday 15.6.06, AM Observers: Tal B, Tal S, Nava M (reporting)Translation: Ruth F.We managed to get hold of information about the restrictions of the day (people between 18-25 years old can’t pass), but only those that have to do with Huwwara cp. The commanders of the other check point refused to give us the information. We didn’t see any detainees. The gate leading to Marda and Zaita were open.8:30- Za’ataraHeading west-The soldiers were hostile, they yelled all the time and were very sensitive to every thing we did (what did we write, why did we ask, don’t look, my name is classified, stand here, don’t come near, don’t look). They tried to have a conversation with us about the morality and justice of having check points, but it all came down to some declaration and mantras. We tried to respond with some arguments that are more then slogans, but the gap between us was too big. The commander refused to talk to us.There was a line of 16 cars, two inspection posts. The Inspection was short, an average waiting time of 5-6 minutes. Near nine o’clock the traffic started to increase, a bus was there and all its passengers have to get out and go through a thorough inspection. There were plenty of cars, making the line grow longer, until it reached a minimum of 40 cars. More inspection posts were opened, and after a while (we didn’t check how much time it took) the line shorted to 26 cars.Four cars were packed with armchairs, one of them was told to take everything off of his cars and then it was inspected by a dog, the others passed without a problem.A truck driver transferring chickens told us that he headed out that morning at about six o’clock from Tul Karem, he was inspected and then passed to Anabta, Jit Burin, and now after three hours, he was still there, he feared the chickens would die of the heat.Heading east-Four cars were in line.The presence of the police was very well felt. After a security check, the police men went on and had the cars examined to see if they are in order then they wrote thickets (250 shekels for not having enough oil). Our presence and questions bothered them.9:45- We headed eastBurin cpThere were no cars, only three bored soldiers.10:50 AwartaOn that morning the check point was opened at 6:15There were very few trucks, and there wasn’t much activity.The conversation topics moved from dealing with the behavior of soldiers at the cp, to dealing with the political implications of the closure and… the mondial. 10:30 Beit FurikAt the parking that is farther on were five cars that were waiting for a signal to come close to the cp.At the cp, the atmosphere was relaxed, the soldiers were friendly and courteous towards the Palestinians that were inspected (and came out with smile), and towards us .11:00 Huwwara The cp worked quickly. There was a line of 8 cars. The crew was friendly.The orders of the day: people between the ages of 18-25 from Nablus, Tul Karem and Jenin, can’t pass.There was much excitement when Abu Mazen’s entourage (about ten fancy limousines, an ambulance and a Hammer).     • The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre  since 2001  two shifts a day -  morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower.  Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.

      On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.

      Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and  a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The  "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.

      On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.

      There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
      They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
