Huwwara Za’atara & rolling CP
Huwwarra, Za’atara and rolling CP, Saturday 25.2.2006Observers: Micky F. Amira A. Natanya translating.Long lines of cars at the crossroads of Zatara. Few passing at Hawarra. The gate at the village of Marda is closed by the army because the children threw stones. 16.15 The Zatara crossroads. 23 cars from the direction of Road 5. Only two soldiers checking. One checks the ids and the other does the rest. A very careful check of the cars, the baggage and glove compartments, boxes, packages. When an Israeli car arrives he leaves everything to remove the plastic orange block and to speak to them. The line lengthens. A driver who is detained while his id is checked says that he left Qalwiliya at 13.30 3 hours on the road or going around. Form the north there are also 30 cars in two lanes. At the turning to Yizhar no checkpoint at this early hour of the evening.17.15 Hawarra. A young man detained for about an hour. A small number of people leaving. No line of cars in either direction.17.25 A passenger in a taxi detained because he forgot his id.The commander A. watches where we go carefully and is angry because his name and the number of his pelaphone appeared in our report. We said he was right and he changed his attitude towards us and tried to help with our requests. Many captains are at this checkpoint according to what he says. They have come as reinforcements because of the situation. After about half an hour the two detainees are freed. 18.30 The crossroads of Yizhar where there is now a checkpoint.About 20 cars waiting, most of those have just passed Hawarra. The commander explains that there is a red alert and they will keep checking the cars till 21.00. In our presence he gives the soldier a command to ease up. “A car with only one driver to go through and also a bus which is empty and older people.” Everyone else has to have their ids checked. Zatara in the evening, No lines. 3 lanes working. A soldier waves his rifle at the drivers and I remark on this to the commander. On road 5 no queue. The soldiers of the military police stop a transit of Israeli Arabs. The passengers descend and the car is very carefully checked. The driver does not have a license or insurance. He is told off, his details taken and sent on his way.19.00 The village of Marda. A new gate locks the village in. The army is standing next to it. Both those entering and exiting are detained. When we ask what is happening the commander of the section says that the children threw stones on cars passing by and also made a blockade of stones and a Palestinian car was hit. This happens about 3 times a week. Yesterday he wanted to speak to the head of the village about this but was refused and told to speak to his brother. Now he is punishing everyone until the head of the village comes to him. The drivers speak to him in fluent Hebrew that they are not responsible for the children. Micky phones the Humanitarian Centre. Suddenly the gate opens and everyone disappears. Evidently the army went to the home of the head of the village.Note should be taken of what happens now with this village. Sorry but we did not take telephone numbers.

Marda
There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
Shoshi AnbarApr-14-2025Marda: The gate has been closed since the beginning of the war
