Anata, Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, Friday 05.08.05 a.m.Observers: Marina, Claire (reporting)Anata 9:15: Five soldiers. One of them approached us as soon as we arrived — very warmly. In response to our question, he said that there is a closure. Twelve vehicles stood in a line after a bus that was being checked. The atmosphere was quiet with people and cars crossing quickly enough . An old woman, without proper papers was not allowed to cross. She went up the hill, apparently to circumvent the checkpoint. Soldiers went up the hill and did not allow her to pass. She argued with them and finally she gave up, but they waited near her and did not leave her. She got up and tried to pass and each time, a soldier stood in her way and blocked her. After several minutes of this “game” she started down the hill toward the checkpoint and disappeared. At the same time, a Palestinian ambulance arrived, stopped and was checked. Also, an older couple with passports arrived and spoke to the soldier in English but he ordered them back. The ambulance crossed. Ar-Ram10:05: There was a change in the checkpoint. Ten people were standing in line and about fifteen vehicles were waiting for inspection. The crossing was relatively quiet. There were ten soldiers there. An old woman with an orange i.d. and a special permit crossed. 10:20 An elderly couple (about 50 years) came. The man underwent inspection but there was a problem with the i.d. of the woman who was a Palestinian. In the end, they did not cross. Qalandiya10:45: There were a lot of people but the crossing was quick and quiet. One man was not allowed to cross. He presented a document from 2002.11:10 A child and young boy were stopped. The gate buzzed when they crossed. They were checked and again tried to cross under the gate. After inspection, they crossed. 11:25 Three boys arrived, loaded down with 10 large plastic, see through bags that were full of all kinds of things. The soldier said that they could not pass. They protested and she called the commander. He said that they could cross but only after they opened all the bags so that he could see what they contained. And so, in the sun, and on the floor, they started to empty each bag and container. There were household goods, underwear, socks, containers of tea, hair brushes, trays, scotchbrite, towels etc. One of the boys gave up, took two bags and went back but he tried to return from the other side. The commander stopped him there and he had to open the bags and empty them all out for inspection. 11:45 The boys crossed. A man who was there approached us and said “Do you see this humiliation? Can you feel it yourselves?” 11:50 We were in the line for the Ar-Ram checkpoint. We crossed at 12:00.
