Abu-Dis, sheikh saed, Zeitim CPSunday, 06.08.2006, AMObservers: Meira A., Dalia K. (reporter)Sheikh Saed: 06:45 – We immediately felt the tense and stormy atmosphere. About 20 youngsters waited in the village a distance from the checkpoint. Occasionally one of the youngsters would break away from the group and get closer to the checkpoint, stop, lift up his shirt, expose his torso, and walk around “like a model”, get a sign from the soldier, and approach in order to be checked or for a permit. Since there is a closure, only residents with Israeli identity cards or residents with the proper permit, are allowed to cross. We noticed that the number of soldiers was relatively big, many of them “new” and very active. A few of the soldiers look around: suddenly they see a figure that tried to get away and they run after him. Later two of the soldiers take a gun with an apparatus to shoot smoke bombs and entered the village on a patrol.A-Sheikh Street in Abu-Dis: 07:30 – The lower doorway ended in a built wall. The blocks that were a temporary obstruction were moved down and left by the side of the wall. The upper doorway was still “open”, even though no one came in or left. Between the two doorways we saw a couple of soldiers on the side of the road.Zeitim CP: 07:40 – At the edge of the road were three cars waiting. No pedestrians were seen at the crossing. There was a feeling of non-activity, maybe because of the closure.7:50 : Crossing at the exit from Al-Ezariya: Border Policemen, but the traffic flows.7:55 The container: 07:50 – When we arrived, 4 yellow taxis and a truck were detained for document inspection. A truck driver claimed that he has been waiting already for half an hour. Then he told us of his troubles on the way: he left his house in Hebron at 05:30, and by the time he got to The Container he was stopped at two additional checkpoints: Aruv and Etzion. Until the time that we left The Container at 08:30, neither the truck driver nor his passengers had gotten their documents back. From the direction of Bethlehem we saw a long line of cars which dissipated within 10 minutes.Az Za’ayyem CP: 08:45 – The traffic is flowing.
