Sheikh Saed, Abu-Dis, Zeitim CPSunday, 27.08.2006, AMObservers: Nava A., Dalia K. (reporter)Sheikh Saed: 06:55-07:50 – When we arrived we saw a group of about thirty detainees waiting (standing) for their documents on the Israeli side of the checkpoint. According to the detainees, some of them were waiting since four o’clock in the morning, others since five (according to the soldiers too). One was waiting even since midnight. Among the detainees there is one inhabitant of Sheikh Saed and one of Jabel Mukaber. The soldiers claimed that they were caught when passing not through the checkpoint. One of the detainees complained that a soldier hit him on his leg by a rifle. The commander in charge denied such a possibility. The policy of passing through the checkpoint as told by the soldiers: people with blue ID, or people with permits who live in Sheikh Saed are allowed to pass. All the other people who have permits are allowed to pass into Israel through the passages Rachel or zeitim CP. This policy was very strictly kept through all the time we stayed there, except of one elderly dialysis patient who was allowed to pass (after we spoke for him) to Augusta Victoria hospital in order to renew his out-of-date permit. As we left Sheikh Saed we took with us the cellular-phone number of one of the detainees, in order to find out later if they were released three hours after they were caught, as the officer had promised us. Abu Dis: 08:06 – The street along the wall is deserted. In the area of the small gates in the wall (Pishpashim), but deeper into the Palestinian area, they keep building the “decorative” wall.Zeitim CP: 08:17 – Very few people pass.08:25 – The exit from Al EzariyaNo checkpoint is there.09:10 – We called the cellular phone of one of the detainees whom we had met at sheikh Saed, in order to find out whether they were already released. He answered that they are still waiting at the checkpoint, and that not long ago a gas grenade was thrown in the village. We decided to go back to Sheikh Saed.Az-Za’ayyem CP: 09:30 – There are two lines. Our line is very slow due to a thorough search in a Palestinian bus.Sheikh Saed: 10:00 – When we arrived we did not see any detainees. We called the man with the cellular phone. He claimed that he got hungry and went away without taking his document back. We found out what may happen to someone like him, and urged him to take his document immediately, or else it will be given to the GSS.
