Abu-Dis, Zeitim CP, Sheikh SaedMonday, 28.08.2006, AMObservers: Ori K., Anat T. (reporter)Abu-Dis: 07:10 – Going through the upper pishpash and the lower gate (decorative fence) is allowed only for inhabitants whose names are in the lists of the soldiers, and children under thirteen (those are demanded sometimes to present a “Kushan”, a birth certificate). We find out after a talk with the BP soldiers that the wall will be moved since the Supreme Court accepted the appeal of those living near the wall.Zeitim CP: 07:30 – Our attempts to find out what is the meaning of the total emptiness – about ten people are there, only one check-up station is open – we find out from the Palestinian transportation people outside of the checkpoint a very amazing fact. Ophir from the DCO and Hana from R.G. verify it: All work permits were abolished when the closure after the war was pulled away – on August 20th. That means that all the permits are not valid anymore, and all the workers who paid social security payments (about 1,000 NIS per month that the employers are supposed to pay but deduct it from the workers’ salary) have to go to Beit-El DCO and ask for a new permit. A new procedure, and no return to their money. Hana in R.G. tells us that this kind of procedure happens after every long closure.Sheikh Saed: 08:20 – The atmosphere is harsh and the soldiers are nervous. There are about ten detainees including women, who were caught in the wadi. On the hilltop there are about fifteen people scattered, most of them older. The commander in the checkpoint is considerate, and lets some older and sick people pass, but some of his soldier’s demand of him to give an order to scatter the people on the hilltop by shock or gas [grenade}. We climb the hill in order to see what is the reason for this requirement and we do not understand the origin of the urgency. When we leave we hear ‘boom’ noises from Sheikh Saed.
