including Sheikh Saed
Sheikh Saed, Abu-DisFriday, 21.07.2006, AMObservers: Tirza L. Daphna R. (guest)Sheikh Saed: 09:10 – About six soldiers are in the checkpoint. There are very few people around. As the minutes pass, more people arrive. About 25 people tried to pass when we were there. The soldiers behave rudely: they laugh at the people who try to pass, curse them. Most of the people who want to pass they return, do not let them pass, and still, from time to time older people pass. About four or five when we were there. Two beduin girls from the Jahlin arrive, the woman soldier checks them and sends them back while warning them not to try again to pass (they probably had tried a few times to pass there). A man comes and wants only to pass a package to a car that waits on the other side of the checkpoint. The soldiers do not allow that. He gives the package to a person with blue ID and he passes without any problem. As a result of the rude behavior we called the Battalion comander – P. and he told us to call the company comander – A.. We called A. He said that he is inside Sheikh Saed and will soon arrive at the checkpoint to take care of it. A few minutes later he arrived. We explained to him about the rude and harsh behavior we saw, and he said that he will take care of it.Abu-Dis: 10:15 – We passed by all the closed openings. There are soldiers by each one of them, and also along the road near the wall. The soldiers along the road stop every taxi and check if everyone has documents, and also part of the private cars.At the closed opening by the monastery, on the other side, there is a line of people waiting to pass. Two soldiers are checking the documents of a person who says that he is on the list. They say that he is not in the list. He claims that they do not have the right list. The rest of the people, about ten of them, are elderly people who want to pass and pray. There is full closure, and the soldiers do not let them pass. The people are waiting, despite the fact that the soldiers tell them that there is no chance that they will pass. An elderly woman comes and points at her mouth. She has to get to a dentist. The soldiers ask for a document confirming it, she has nothing and they do not let her pass. When we came back to the road along the wall we saw soldiers checking a woman going out. She has no document and they detain her. The soldiers fill up a report immediately and tell her that they will send her back.
