Irtach, Jubara, A-ras, Anabta and Beit Iba
Irtach, Jubara, A-ras, Anabta, Beit Iba, 1.6.2006, Thursday morning.Observers; Hadassah, Estie. RuthNatanya translating.6.50 Irtach- The parking area is full of vehicles waiting to take workers. Those who come out of the checking area say that it only opened at 6.00 and not at 5.00. Out of four checking posts only one is working and there is a waiting period of at least an hour. Those in line are send to a narrow checking room which causes pressure and over-crowding inside this room. Until they actually get to these rooms they have been waiting for at least an hour and this after those with permits have been waiting since 5am. There is anger and bitterness and some who come out find that the contractors for whom they work have not waited for them. They ask us to help make sure that the checkpoint opens in the future at 5am as it is supposed to. The problem also is when they come back as not always the gate through which they are supposed to pass until a certain hour is open until that hour. The soldiers wait until there are is a crowd waiting to return and then only open the gates and so the suffering continues. Yesterday the gate closed at 5.30.7,20 Jubara, checkpoint of A-Ras- The checkpoint is dirty, dusty smoking fires, the morning is still early and already it is hot and sticky and the clouds of dust caused by the cars makes waiting difficult. The soldiers do not speak to us or return our greeting. About 10 cars on each side. The checking of those alighting from the cars is very careful, the men are asked to lift their shirts and vests, the weapons are drawn, it is a scene which causes one to shudder. There are complaints about this check each day even though this is where they pass on a daily basis.7.45 Anabta- 12 cars in each direction and the soldiers try to ease the pressure by checking quickly. Cars try to bypass and are sent back including those of the UN.8.30 Beit Iba- Many soldiers because of a change in the shift. The soldiers are ordered by the commander not to speak to us. The traffic flows. Many people and the checking is careful but swift. Almost no cars.We left at 9.30.
Beit Iba
See all reports for this place-
A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
