Irtah, sunday, 18.9.05, AMObservers: Dafna A. Neomi K. Orna F. (reporting)Irtah7:00 AM- About 15 Israeli employers are waiting for day workers. The workers come out very slowly from the checkpoint. Behind the facility, where the worker waits to enter from the Territories through the carousels, 100 people wait to go into the checking facility. According to the workers, due to the long procedure, they are late and the employers don’t always wait for them. We saw three workers turn back but did not have a chance to talk to them. The employers say the workers only pass the checkpoint at 9:00 AM and have to be back by 16:00 so there is no point employing them. Both employers and employees say the only way to complete a whole day of work is to sleep in Israel, even if they have no permit to do so. The workers were angry and frustrated and said to us: What do you come here for if you can not help?” They say that if this situation will continue they will revolt. After the workers pass the carousel they run into the checkpoint, where there is only one female soldier checking papers, out of 16 checking posts. That explains why the checkpoint is so crowded. The officer in charge says that it is all due to a man power problem. They have three checkpoints to check: Jubara, Irtah (back to back) and Irtah (workers). They have to do all this with the same man power they had before for only Irtah. The officer also said the according to his instruction we are not allowed in the checking area. We called Ella, the representative of IDF’s north spokesman, who returned our call, apologized and promised it would not happen again. She said two more checking post would be opened but we said that 8:00 AM is too late. We asked to meet with someone from the Military police to discuss the issue and she gave us Y.’s phone number. Y. is in charge of international organizations and human rights in IDF spokesman. We asked him as well to meet with someone high ranking in the Military Police. He promised to give us an answer – we are still waiting. Everyone was very polite, it seemed like they were instructed to be polite.
