IRTAH, JUBARA, Thursday 17 June 2004 AMObservers: Ruth, Hadassah, Esti (reporting) IrtahThe gate opened at 06:00.When we arrived there before 07.00 we met many workers who were already waiting for vehicles to come and collect them. There were no trucks waiting in line. The military police unit on duty here appeared calm. We asked if we could enter, but the soldiers refused. When we spoke to the officer, he gave us permission. We deposited our I.D. cards and went in to see from close up how people were passing through. There were no particular problems – the queue moved smoothly. We asked about the line of trucks that we used to see here, the officer answered that while he did not know for sure, maybe it was because of a checkpoint that had opened at Einav (Anabta) and that they had gone there. When we left at 07.15 there were three trucks.Jubara A soldier at the checkpoint was checking a woman’s Israeli ID card and forbade her to go across to visit family in Tulkarm. One man was sent away roughly for no apparent reason. After this, there was smooth movement through the checkpoint and there were no detainees. We brought clothes and games for the residents of Jayyus, some of whom came to collect them. The soldiers said that we were not allowed to pass on goods, so we telephoned to K. [ a senior official in the local District Coordinating Office (DCO), th army section that handles civilian maters and usually has representatives at the checkpoints, ostensibly to alleviate the lot of the Palestiniains], who spoke to the soldiers and solved the problem. We were told that it was a one-time concession, and one soldier complained that we had turned to K. The parcels were delivered safely.

Jayyus Village. Some of its lands were separated from the village when the separation barrier was first built. The wall is very close to the village itself and access to a large part of its lands was exproptiated. After a petition to the High Court that was convinced that there was no security ground for the route of the barrier, the barrier was moved and some of the lands were returned to the village.
