Irtah – Jubara – Anabta, Monday, 5.9.05, AMObservers: Rachel A., Ruhama S., Edna M. (reporting)Irtah06:05 – The CP is closed, despite my conversation with Kamil the evening before. I called the DCO, where I was told that it might open at 7 o’clock to workers. It was closed at 7 o’clock too. We proceeded to Jubara, to barrier 407.Jubara06:20 – People we talked to and Abu-Hatem himself are satisfied, because they enjoy free movement as in the old days. Yet, a bus driver of school children complained that the soldiers warned him that he may enter the village but will not be allowed to return this way. We interfered and asked the soldiers why they act like this when there are clear instructions to let busses for pupils pass here. Their answers were vague and evasive; our message was clear. 06:50 – A long line of vehicles (I counted over 20) stretched from the Tulkarm direction on the underpass road. We observed from above. 3 soldiers were checking very slowly each vehicle at the entrance to the tunnel. I do not know if our observation had any influence, but suddenly at about 07:20 the inspections stopped and the vehicles started to move. It is important to observe from as close as possible at what happens on this road. At the upper exit from the direction of Tulkarm, pedestrians with permits of agricultural workers pass. One person (whom I know) is detained on the pretext that he has a fake permit. They called the General Security Service to check on him. Only on the arrival of the commander of the CP and his verifying that it is a valid permit, he was allowed to pass through. Sheer harassment. Three drivers of vehicles with vegetables were ordered to take all the boxes down on the earth. The soldiers inspected all the vegetables thoroughly. Only then, after loading again, they were allowed to pass. The vehicles are also inspected thoroughly and slowly. The soldiers are not familiar with the different authorizations and permits, and we have to interfere from time to time (to no avail). After the passing over of the people and the vehicles, we carried on to Shufa on the settlers’ road. Anabta07:45 – We drove up to the gate with the gray bar. A few taxis await people from Tulkarm and Nablus. The traffic is sparse. There are no busses. The drivers did not complain and did not mention roadblocks.
