Jalama, Rihan, Wednesday, March 16, 2005, AMObservers: Sandra R., Lea R. (reporting)6:15 – Jalama checkpointWe wanted to go to the Palestinian waiting shed. A soldier called somewhere and said that we couldn’t do that. So we stood at the exit from the “sleeve.” There was a stream of Palestinian workers, among them many women. They said that their waiting time for the inspection was no longer than half an hour. They all held working permits. Mostly they are employed by farmers. They appeared content that they can work and make a living. A soldier told us that they had opened the CP at 5 AM.8:00 – 9:15 – Rihan checkpointVery few pedestrians. There are more pickup trucks with agricultural merchandise.Among the few pedestrians were some people who had no permits and were denied passage at first. Now they were allowed in, we don’t know how.A Palestinian went through with many egg-crates. He brought them in through the pedestrian inspection post. He had to make a detour due to the barbed wire at the car park. He said that each days he has a surprise: there are days when the soldiers allow him to transfer all crates, at times only 10 and sometimes none. Today he was able to transfer all crates and he was smiling. As we were ending our shift, we met Susan, the teacher from the Arab-American university near Jenin. She is due to visit us next Monday, March 21, 2005.

North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
