Jalama, Rihan
Jalama, Rihan, Sunday, July 24, 2005, AMObservers: Raya Z., Neta G. (reporting)Jalama, 06:00 – 06:10 – Closure. The CP commander tells us that the only Israeli citizens going through this CP at closure times (aside from the settlers) is the manager of the sewing workshop in Jalama.Rihan, 07:00 – 8:50 – As soon we walked in through the sleeve , people turned to us angrily, reporting of the return of the “dance procedure” for drivers. And indeed that procedure has been restored. The female soldier at the post was strict in her orders, given via the loudspeaker and instructing drivers: ”Please lift up your shirt and pants.” The polite attitude makes the “dance” seem even more surreal. We do need to emphasize that two vehicles were inspected simultaneously and the line was short, no more than three-four cars waiting at a time.Upon our arrival, the CP commander, Sergeant A., introduced himself in a polite manner, asking us only to speak either with him or with P.At the detention pen there were four detainees who were released within half an hour. Before the end of our shift there were eight detainees. Sergeant A. said that the detention period is about half an hour. A minute later a soldier brought all the ID cards of the eight and they were freed.Due to the closure, the checkpoint has became a meeting place of residents of the seam line zone, who are permitted to go through even at times of closure, and of those holding other permits and who have business relations with them but are banned from going through. They are not allowed to meet at the waiting shed, nor at the car park area by the passage, and so they are forced to meet at the parking lot located at a distance, on the Palestinian side.

North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
