Jalama, Shaked, Rihan, Sunday, June 19, 2005, AMObservers: Raya Z. , Neta G. (reporting)Jalama 06:00 – 06:50Workers come out of the sleeve to their transportation to work. As they get out of the inspection post they fix their clothes after being required to unbutton, undo belts, etc.We are told by Palestinians that the CP was opened this morning at 5:30.Following a telephone clearance, we are allowed to go to the Palestinians’ waiting shed, and we go there through the sleeve (in the opposite direction). At the shed we see about 40 people, men and women, who tell us they today’s’ inspection is going smoothly. Their request is that the CP open at 05:00. We drove back on the paved road.Shaked gate – 07:40 – 07:50The two gates are open; soldiers stand between them. There are no people wishing to cross the gate at this time. The first gate bears a sign with the opening hours posted on it. Lieutenant G. politely explains to us that the sign is intended to avoid arguments with Palestinians. According to him those allowed through this gate are school children (by a formal list) and others with passage permit for this specific gate. He also adds that in humanitarian cases they would let people through, even without a permit.Rihan – 08:00 – 09:00Very quiet, there are hardly any pedestrians or vehicles. The commander at the pedestrian post, a sergeant, allows us to stand only at the Palestinian side. We passed through the car park area, which is blocked by a yellow gate, on our way to the vehicle inspection post. The few drivers who did arrive had to go through that new “procedure.” One female driver, dressed in traditional Arabic attire, didn’t follow the new instructions, and as she arrived at the gate she was ordered to get out of the car and a female soldier was called in to inspect her.

    • North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
