Abu-Dis, Wadi Nar (the container) Thursday, 16.9.04, AMObservers: Angela G., Naama K., Yosef M. (driving), Shalmit B (reporting)New Year Day and the occupied territories are in closure until the end of Yom Kippur (25.9.04).In Abu-Dis we do not observe any BP soldiers, and few civilians are crossing in the area of the Pishpash gate. In a conversation with taxi drivers we hear serious complaints about the new check point in the area of Ma’ale Adumim. Background:Before the paving of the new road connecting Kedar Settlement to the Jerusalem-Ma’ale Adumim road, the Jews and the Arabs used the same road connecting the area North of Jerusalem to the Jeusalem-Ma’ale Adumim road. Today Kedar settlers can use a new road from which they can reach directly to Ma’ale Adumin without passing any CPs, while the Arabs are allowed to pass only on the old road, and if they wish to turn east to Ma’ale Adumin they find themselves stuck in the CP.According the drivers, the jams every morning in the CP are intolerable. Passing takes between 2 to 3 hours, and completely disturbs the life of people on their way to work and studies. One of the drivers asked us to come and watch, since he feels the soldiers deliberately detain the cars in the CP every morning. In addition, he shared his harsh feelings for that in spite of holding a blue I.D., as an Arab he cannot use the new road, and feels discriminated. Wadi NarThe CP is getting the shape of a permanent passage.Due to the closure, there are no pedestrians. The line of cars is short, and they are let through after a short IDs check. The commander of the CP [Y.] is free to chat with us politely. He is relatively grown-up and makes the impression of a reasonable man, unlike his young soldiers.
