Jerusalem
Ar-ram, Qalandiya 01.07.05 a.m.Observers: Vanda R, Gali A (reporting)Ar-Ram9.30: Ordinarily, inspite of the considerable traffic, both vehicles and pedestrians cross quickly. There were about 20 detainees, — women, children, and one man — standing in the sun as we approached. We asked why they were being detained and were told that they were caught trying to circumvent the checkpoint via the wadi. When we asked how much more time they must wait, the commander of the checkpoint agressively told us that they were waiting for an hour and therefore he has the right to hold them another two hours.A set of parents with their child were taken off a bus that was travelling toward Jerusalem. They said that they wanted to get to the hospital but they left their permit at home. The commander of the checkpoint wasn’t there at the time, and the border police officer that arrived on a jeep tour permitted them to continue on their way. Five minutes afterwards, the parents and the child were returned to the checkpoint by the commander who apparently caught them as they were on their way. He angered me even more than before when he burst out shouting at all those present. He told us to get away and stop bothering and told all those waiting in line to go home. No one moved, and after a few minutes, everything continued as if nothing had happened. Only the couple and their child had to give up and return home. We waited until the detained women and children were released after they signed the requisite forms. Only the man remained when we left. In the course of the 3/4 hours that we were there, there was involvement of the blue police. When we arrived, a police patrol checked the cars and the travellers going to Qalandiya, and on the other side, a policewoman registered all those pedestrians crossing the checkpoint toward Jerusalem. After about 20 minutes, the police patrol left and one of the soldiers took the place of the policewoman in registering the pedestrians. Five minutes later, another patrol arrived. This time, they were on the lane of cars entering Jerusalem and wrote down the details of every driver, including his license number.Qalandiya10:20: Aside from the icy reception with which the soldiers greeted us — “Those women are here again” — it was quiet and calm. Few peddlers, few pedestrians, and the soldiers were busy joking among themselves.
