Qalandiya, Tuesday 27.9.2005 PMWatchers: Roni H. Iris B. Nora O. (reporting)We went straight to Kalandia so as to be present at the demonstration of the refugee village of Shuafat opposite the Jerualem municipality.15.00 Qalandiya One of the most upsetting shifts at the checkpoint which is being built so rapidly and reminds one of Dante’s Inferno with the amounts of cement blocks all over , the narrow passages, the confusion which gets worse and worse at the roundabout and at the area behind and around it. The piles of rubbish , the noise which deafens one’s ears, and at the same time people going south and north, cars struggling to get there with the appropriate hooting and the traders who are trying to survive in spite of the threats. There were no mentionable episodes. We tried to help a man with a Jordanian passport living in Beit Zafafa with his wife and who is attempting the family reunion. Niv, the commander refused to allow him to return to Jerusalem, On the phone Amos, the commander of the DCO of the envelope of Jerusalem said that it is forbidden for a man to leave Jerusalem until the court reaches a decision, but at the same time the man is not allow into the area because there is no obligation to allow him to return to Jerusalem. We tried to understand the meaning of “no obligation” and asked for consideration but to no avail. At the area where cars are checked, four elegant lanes , the cars pass fairly quickly. The problems of the cars going south is getting to the check point. We left Qalandiya at 17.00 and went to the centre of town for the demonstration. The background: During the last few weeks the building of the wall has been quickened in the area of the refugee camp. The wall is near the houses of the camp and some houses have already been destroyed to allow this. Tens of other houses with thousands of occupants are under threat. About 3 weeks ago a committee of the people was formed to oppose this and for the first time ever the committee and hundreds of inhabitants were to make a first demonstration in West Jerusalem, in the large Zafra Square near the municipality where, unfortunately, a couple of hundred people did not stand out. Only a few Israelis took part and those of us from Machsomwatch wearing our badges were well received. We were again told how glad they were to see us at the checkpoints. Small mercy on such a sad day.
