Jubara, Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2006 Watchers: Merav and Adi (reporting) 13:00At the entrance to the village the soldiers ask us if we belong to a certain organization. We show them the sign and get in. The children gate is deserted. A horse with a cart enters the gate. A pastoral atmosphere. At the checkpoint there are two people in the hut of the detainees [being held for a security background check]. A few minutes later a brother of one of them arrives and releases them. The soldiers tell us that a curfew’s been imposed on Jenin. No one leaves or gets in, they say. We walk on the road in order to see the tunnel. In the tunnel the traffic, both cars and pedestrians, is flowing. At the northern checkpoint, the checking is strict and slow. All the passengers get out of the vehicle. They lift their shirts and turn around. All of them, one after the other, are checked very slowly. Suddenly everything stops because of a woman dressed in black and the soldiers demand identification. A woman soldier is called by the sergeant in order to compare her face with the picture in her ID card. In the meantime, the soldiers get into a loud argument with the woman’s husband and their two small kids. When we ask the soldiers about it, they say that there is something threatening and they stop the checking. A line of six cars and a number of pedestrians are waiting for the checking to continue. A family with an elderly man, ask to cross to the village Kadum. The soldiers make them go back and tell them to walk through the tunnel and then through another checkpoint. The porter, who carries parcels for his living, comes to shake hands with us. He says that the soldiers who are here today are great. The teacher from Jubara comes from the direction of Tulkarm. She is very happy to see us and she asks us to give her regards to Tami Cohen. We give her a lift home and continue on our way home.In conclusion: This checkpoint is like having a mouthful of gravel…
