Jubara, Monday, 1.8.05, AMObservers: Ella M. Roni S. Naomi L. Herzliah A. (reporting). 6.40 We parked at the house of Abu Ghatem who asked for money for looking after the car. The soldiers acted correctly towards the Palestinians at the checkpoint. A resident of Yata, next to Hebron, had been for some time at Taybeh and wanted to get to Tulkarm and from there to his home. He did not have an id but a temporary permit to the effect that his id was being dealt with. The soldiers did not accept this and sent him back. We wanted him to wait for a representative of the DCO but he was only expected in another 45 minutes. We took his details and went on to Beit Iba. And from there once more contacted the DCO. After a short check he was able to go on his way. At the exit from Tulkarm a separate check was made of pedestrians and cars at a reasonable rate. At Anabta there were no soldiers either on our way there or back.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
