Jubara, Anabta, Thursday AM, April 20, 2006 Watchers: Hadassah, Esti, and Rutie (reporting)7:15 – Jubara Complete closure [i.e. no passage allowed regardless of permits]. There isn’t a soul at the entrance to and exit from Jubara. At the checkpoint in the direction of Tulkarm there are a few taxis waiting.7:35 – Anabta Closure. Anabta residents are not permitted passage to Nablus, except those holding special permits, doctors, and Nablus hospital workers. Residents of the villages of Bet Lid, Shufa, and Safrin are permitted to return to their homes. At the checkpoint we meet a group of around 10 female students who are attempting to get to the university in Nablus. They say they have an exam at 9:00. The checkpoint soldiers do not permit them to cross. They try to appeal to the soldiers and we try to assist, but the order is clear cut and unambiguous. Starting from the day before yesterday, because of the terrorist attack in Tel Aviv, there’s closure in effect and no exceptions are made. The soldier at the checkpoint responds to their repeated question “Why are they prevented from getting to the exam?” by saying that these are the orders, that he does not determine the policy, and asks them whether they’ve heard of the terrorist attack. After repeated attempts, they give up and go back to where they came from.Another group of five women dressed in the coats of a humanitarian organization also wish to get to Nablus. They volunteer twice a week in schools and public institutions and lead public information activities against violence in general, domestic violence, and so forth. They hold documentation of the organization to which they belong. Their passing through too is refused. Hadassah speaks with the Anabta brigade commander and he says, cordially, that he’ll look into it and take care of business. The women wait for around half an hour and then give up and get on a taxi. Later, to our great surprise, we meet them at the Beit Iba checkpoint where they cross without any difficulty!!!!A taxi driver whose car keys were taken yesterday arrives to ask for the keys. He is refused. The soldiers say he tried to break through the checkpoint yesterday and that’s why he’s punished. Later, on the way back from the Beit Iba checkpoint [see separate report under Nablus], we pass through the Anabta checkpoint again, and the driver gets the car keys.
