Jubara, Anabta, Ar-Ras, Thursday AM, 18 May 2006Watchers: Hadassa, Esthi, Ruti Guest: Babette (second time. Babette leads a project from the US dealing with communication of the various sides in disputed areas.) 07:30, JubaraThe road leading to the entrance to Tulkarm is ploughed up. The way is blocked. A large [construction vehicle? illegible] is working on the ground. The gate to the village is closed to vehicles except military. 07:45, Anabta CheckpointA line of 13 cars in the direction of Tulkarm. The line is released quickly. Checks both of vehicles and pedestrians are speedy. In the opposite direction, the restrictions on entry of men aged 15-30 are still in force. Women enter without restriction. The soldiers are efficient, friendly. There are no special events. We continue to Beit Iba (separate report; see under Nablus). On our way back, we seek to enter Jubara. At the checkpoint there are two soldiers wearing skullcaps, and the reinforcement of a “seam line volunteer” (former IDF reservist) who insists on checking our IDs and Nadim’s. After inspection we enter. We pass through the Schoolchildren’s Gate on to A-Ras Checkpoint.10:15, A-Ras Checkpoint A long line of cars. Meticulous checks of the cars and passengers. Residents of Jubara are allowed to bypass the line. Here as well the soldiers are carrying out the inspections efficiently and fairly.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
