Jubara, Irtah
Jubara, Irtah, Sunday AM, 19 February 2006 Watchers: Sara B, Naomi K (reporting)We decided to start at the Schoolchildren’s Gate to confirm whether the bus had passed.07:05 –the checkpoint at the entrance to JubaraWe are requested to produce our IDs to enter the village (a request never heard before). It appears that the list of members of MW does not include Sara. The soldiers let her in and asked us to add her name to the list. MachsomWatch note: Who is responsible for this? We will be grateful for the addition…Facing us, at the exit from Tulkarm, a few score of people in line. No detainees.07:15 – the Schoolchildren’s Gate: The bus has already gone, according to the evidence of a taxi driver, without any delay.07:30 – Irtah: the Laborer’s Terminal: Quite a few cars in the parking lot. We went to check whether the laborers had passed. At first glance the turnstiles seemed empty. A second look revealed scores of laborers crowded in under the nearby roof. When they saw us, they came closer to the turnstile shouting, “What’s going on?” Turns out that the terminal had not opened at all this morning. Amid the hubbub, a Humvee arrived, a woman driver and a young officer, who says: “You [MachsomWatch] are forbidden to be here!” (We said we are permitted.) “All the mess is because of you. Until I managed to get them all into the shed.” [i.e., like livestock.] We asked why there is no passage of laborers. “Because of a drop in electric current at night, all the computers are down, everything is stuck!” The laborers shout: ”Israel has missiles, and you can’t fix the electricity?” The officer (in despair): “Ask them to return to the shed. They won’t listen to me.” We took phone numbers from the laborers and promised to clarify. They were worried about the implications for tomorrow. The terminal was closed. By the door we met a civilian who claimed to be responsible for the place. He repeated the description of the power failure, and said they were waiting for a repair team who should arrive any minute. If it is repaired quickly, the terminal will open for transit…When I said that the [laborers’] workday appeared lost, he agreed. We reported that to the laborers, who thanked us.08:00 – Jubara, the exit from Tulkarm: The line is small, only a few waiting.
