Morning
Observers: V. B.,V. S., I. B. and guest E. R.Summary-A long and weary shift, on the four checkpoints long lines proceeding very slowly, not enough soldiers on three of the four checkpoints Beit fouriq,Tapuah junction an Sarra, most of the soldiers were very young and inexperienced though good natured and cooperative. A day off at schools and universities and no students at the checkpoints of Beit fouriq and Hawara but many women with young children. Why holiday? Well it is the Palestinian independence day, you are welcome to laugh, the Palestinians told us that, bursting with bitter laughter. Passage permitted today for all women, different card holders permits from the DCO. Restriction passage age for men not in these categories is16-35.Beit Fouriq- long lines proceeding very slowly, only two soldiers checking strictly Id”s and luggage and we had to be very careful not to undermine any soldier’s authority in front of his partner, concessions were made here and there depending on the momentary concern of the soldier to the Palestinians human rights, We left when still masses of people kept arriving to the checkpoint probably due to the school holiday and the nice weather. It is painful as always to see the Palestinians so obedient .Huwarra – an awful chaos. A huge crowd packed on the small space pushing shoving each other to get to the top of the queu, About 30 detainees waiting on the side, some of them waiting for their ID’s three hours already. About eight soldiers and few officers of the DCO were present but they were all very inefficient and the DCO officers completely useless. Doron a reserve officer from the DCO was completely lost between showing his genuine concern for the Palestinians and between handling the angry crowd and the more angry detainees. Checking the high pile of the confiscated ID’s did not proceed at all . No one knew how to cope but the soldiers were attentive and they accepted our suggestions and assistance in negotiating with the crowd. The detainees were people who had legitimate rights to show up at the cp and pass through to Nablus, not bypassers as usual. Their ID”s were randomly confiscate for checking which took 2-3 hours. The most striking cases among the detainees were one man with his 7 years old nephew and the other man with his baby son. They too had to wait this long time and the seven years old boy was so frightened that he kept weeping and was about to vomit. .After we showed up and intervened, the queue shortened and the detainees started to be released. One man lost his confiscated ID when it was returned by error to somebody else, we worked very hard to convince the officer to write him an official note about it.Tapuah junction -Zaatara checkpoint – about 20 vehicles and many pedestrians some of them waiting already for more than two hours, Only two soldiers doing the checking for the north – south direction and others at guard posts on the sides of the road. The pace for the south – north direction was reasonable and steady but not so for the other direction. That was the situation in the morning and also when coming back to Jerusalem after few hours. The soldiers at Tapuah junction told us to go to Sarra checkpoint where things were much worse.Sarra checkpoint – In the middle of nowhere a checkpoint on dusty roads connecting small villages to Nablus. Two soldiers doing the checking and others guarding on the surrounding hills, a modern pillbox on one of the hills. The passengers have to walk about one kilometer through a sloppy road in order to make their way through the cp and take other transport means. The same regulations but the senior soldier was very hostile .He kept repeating his threats about either closing the cp and harming the Palestinians or declaring the area as a closed military zone. We couldn’t do much to intervene on behalf of the Palestinians especially when we couldn’t actually approach the checking post.V. had the chance to talk to a man who had a scar of Magen David on his arm, a soldier did it to him few months ago with a broken glass. Appalling. He got in touch with Betslem.

Sarra
The checkpoint is installed between the Palestinian village of Sera and the district city of Nablus,
Since 2011, internal barriers Located among the West Bank Israeli settlements have somehow allowed, Palestinian residents to travel and move and reach various Palestinian cities.
After the terrible massacre by the Hammas on October 7 upon Israelis in the communities around Gaza, internal checkpoints manned by the army were installed to prevent free passage for Palestinians.
Many restrictions were imposed on the Palestinians in the West Bank. The prevention of movement shuttered the possibility of making a living in Israel. The number of Palestinian attacks by Israeli extremist settlelers increased along with the radicalization of the army against the Palestinians.
The conduct at the Sera checkpoint is one of the manifestations of the restrictions on all aspects of the Palestinians' lives.
