Qalandiya checkpoint and Shuafat refugee camp.MachsomWatchers: J.S., Ch.A. (reporting)We arrived at the Qalandiya checkpoint at 6:30 AM. Not a lot of people in line and almost no cars southward bound, but all went smooth. No detainees and one woman soldier smiling at everyone: “You have to show them a nice face,” she said.We went toward the taxi station direction Jabba and took a taxi-van to the Shuafat refugee camp, since women have said there were problems there and no watchers. After the trip through Anata, Palestine, and Anata, Israel, we reached the camp. There were three soldiers at the checkpoint, but no one was being held up. A long line of cars was going into the city, but it was just a traffic jam (the narrow road has something to do with it too). We walked on the left side of the road, where there was no traffic going into the camp. Having left our car at Qalandia, we had to get back. We took J.’s car to go back through A-Ram to Qalandiya. All seemed as before, now an hour and a half later. Going back to A-Ram we stood in line for five minutes (two lines of cars as was reported) and saw an even flow of pedestrians.

    • two kilometers south of Qalandiya and 300 metres north of Neve Yaacov Junction, in Dahiyat el-Barid Quarter. Checkpoint has operated since 1991, in a Palestinian area annexed to Jerusalem in 1967. The checkpoint has been inactive since the middle of 2009.

The wall was built on the road that led to Jerusalem. Since then the situation in the town has deteriorated. Houses are abandoned and half finished, most of the businesses have closed. Severe neglect around the fence and on the streets. Those who could left. Updated January 2024
