Nablus, Shave Shomron, Dir Sharif and Beit Iba
Checkpoints of Nablus, Shave Shomron, Dir Sharif, Beit Iba, 19.6.2006, Wednesday morningObservers: Osnat R. Naomi L. Roni S. (Naomi and Roni reporting)Natanya translating.9.20 Shave Shomron. We did nto see cut down trees in the “confiscated areas.” Next to the checkpoint we met a group of highly placed captains. They told us that the road to Tulkarm and Jenin will be opened in the next few weeks. The wall alongside the road is part of the preparations. They say that there will not be a checkpoint next t the entrance to Shave Shomron but only rolling checkpoint for information purposes. They described the uprooting and replanting of the tree in the confiscated areas as being “for the good of the Palestinians.” We spoke to the shop owner at Dir Sharif who was very calm and understood that there was no point in appealing the High Court of Justice. 10.05 Beit Iba. Many taxis and mounds of rubbish great us. Few cars in line at the entrance to Nablus. The traffic is flowing and there are no limitations on entrance to Nablus. At the exit is a logner line and those between 18-25 are not allowed out. When we arrive there are 5 detainees, taxi drivers. The captain says that they came too near the checkpoint and interfered with the work. When we arrived they were freed. The young people who were allowed to pass were carefully checked and had to take everything out of their bags and parcels. We left at 10.30

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
