Abu Dis, Wadi NarThurs. 01/07/04 afternoonobservers: Sima S., Maya M (reporting) guests: Ravit C., Galit K. We first visited the Hotel at Abu Dis. We noticed ther BP on the topstory who were observing the traffic on the road leadind south along the Wall. At thePishpash gate there was a lot of traffic, people climbing the wall in both directions and no BP around. At Wadi Nar pedestrians and cars passed at a reasonable pace. Howeverthere were many cars that were detained for an hour or more for ID checks or as a punishment. There were two cases of sick people who were discharged fromthe hospital in Ramallah and wanted to reach Hebron. We called Dalia Bassem but they were allowed to pass before the call from Dalia came through. We were told by the soldiers that Qalandiya checkpoint was closed today andthat they were ordered not to allow residents of Hebron to pass to Abu Dis. The commander of the checkpoint ordered us not to speak with the detainees. A Taxi driver at Wadi Nar told us the following story: On wednesday June30 at 3 am there were a number of cars at the Wadi Nar checkpoint. Thesoldiers asked the drivers to move their cars a distance of about 100 meters fromthe checkpoint. After these cars moved the soldiers went up to the watchtower and THREW STONES ON THE CARS AND BROKE THEIR WINDOWS AND HEADLIGHTS ANDTHE FRONT WINDOW OF A BUS!!!!!!!!> _________________________________________________________________>

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox

- The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
