Qalandiya and Ar-Ram August 1, 2004Watchers: Nataniya G., Tamar F.Qalandiya: The soldiers were efficient, a police car was there to stop vehicles from both sides and check their license. There was one police officer who was handing out reports to drivers that didn’t fasten their seat belts.A volunteer named Hana gave us some lesson on the importance of taking care of the soldiers, how important it was to bring them cookies, and that it is best to volunteer for the sake of the suffering Jewish society. In the room near the checkpoint (at the east-side) was a Palestinian who was undergoing a test that was supposed to see if he had come across any explosives during the last week. The officer who told us about these tests didn’t know much about them. Ar-Ram: There were only a few people going through the checkpoint, and two people from Hebron who were caught in Beit Hanina were detainees. The checkpoint’s commander told us not to speck to them. We waited 15 minutes till they were released.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
