Qalandiya and Vicinity, Wednesday, 7.6.06 PMObservers: Yvonne M, Tami B, Ruthi B, Chana T (reporting)16:00 – 18:00Ar-Ram Checkpoint – almost no one trying to pass in the direction of Jerusalem. A woman of perhaps 40 passes in front of us, back and forwards, with a determined stride. No bags, no packages. The ID card in her right hand the only “burden.”Route 443 – A high decorative wall continues to be built on the south side of the road. On the descent from 443 towards Qalandiya Checkpoint, we turn left and try to continue into Qalandiya village. Five combat engineers on a checkpoint that we don’t recognise will not allow us to proceed westward into the village. Entrance is permitted solely for residents. According to the soldier, a wall will also be built there, so that Qalandiya will be a part of the Jib enclave, and there will be a gate open at certain hours. For the moment it is still possible to travel on the “fabric of life road” from east to west. The above checkpoint prevents transit from the West Bank to Route 443 and onward. We tried to enter Bir Naballah from the eastern entrance, coming off the old Route 60. The routing of the enclave wall already exists in the form of a metal fence. We couldn’t continue. Part of the fence passes in an east-west direction then curves southward. Within the enclave all the cars have Palestinian number plates, with yellow (Israeli) numbers on the back.Qalandiya Checkpoint – a “bandit” is selling out of a scrap heap of a car. He has two wives and ten children, and gets a ticket every day from Jerusalem City inspectors. On the north side of the fence, they are finishing the hanging of a huge metal gate at an opening in the wall. The gate, which will apparently open easier from the north side, will allow direct traffic into Ar-Ram or from there northwards.
