Shaked, Rihan, Saturday, May 27, 2006, AMObservers: Sarit A, Shula N (reporting)07:25 – 09:40 Shaked, 07:25 The gate is open, the schoolchildren have already crossed, and a few more children arriving individually are checked in pairs and passed through. Two youths told us they are coming up to matriculation exams in English, and are planning to study at the university in Nablus next year.Three adults pass without problems – apparently they are on “the list.”No contact or comment from the soldiers. We left, and the gate closed at 08:00. Rihan, 08:05 Individual cars waiting to cross, a few people coming out of the terminal.Transit is very quick.A truck loaded with goods is standing at the side, and the driver is offloading everything onto the road by the truck. A woman soldier climbs onto the empty truck, and the process of reloading begins – a 20 minute job – then the process is repeated with another truck. The place is quite deserted. We stand at the entrance to the terminal and the woman soldier in the shift shouts and speaks in a vulgar way to Palestinians who apparently don’t have appropriate permits. On the way to the car, shouts could be heard: passengers had been taken out of one of the taxis and obliged to walk through. They had small children in their arms, and the driver’s protests were to no avail – the soldier would not let them pass. They complained to us about the cruelty of the soldiers. The surprising thing was that they let other taxis through with their passengers. Who can solve this puzzle?
