Shaked, Rihan
Shaked, Rihan, Wednesday, May 31, 2006, PMObservers: Bruria, Nava (reporting)Shaked, 13:35 The gates are open, no children, only a few adults passing.Rihan, 13:50The driver of a van asks us for help: until today he has been transporting seeds from Barta’a to Yabed (on the Palestinian side of the checkpoint) without any problems. He has a license and permits. This is his livelihood and he has been doing it for a long time. Suddenly, today, they told him that he could no longer transport seeds through Rihan. From the District Coordination Office we received a categorical answer, that from now on “there is no more possibility of transporting seeds from (Palestinian) East Barta’a to the (Palestinian) West Bank.” So how is he supposed to move them? He should hire an Israeli truck and send his product through Israel to the back-to-back checkpoint at Jalama, and from there by Palestinian truck to Yabed. The checkpoint commander contends that this entire matter is under the jurisdiction of the Military Police (?). None of the phone calls we made did any good. There is a new policy that the residents of East Barta’a will be unable to cope with. They are stuck between the fence and the Green Line – unable to swallow, unable to vomit. For the purpose of making a living, they are forbidden entry to Israel, and are not allowed to go to the West Bank!At 15:00, we left.
Jalama

North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
