Shaked, Rihan, Wednesday, July 27, 2005, AMObservers: Yaira G., Tami Shy (reporting)07:30 – 08:00 07.00 – Shaked: Soldiers inside the Hummer vehicle on the western side of the barrier, 4 Palestinians and a donkey on the eastern side. Everyone is waiting for 7.15, the scheduled time for opening the gate. Exactly at 07.15 the gate opens and one by one they all pass through according to the list the soldier is holding. Unlike the adjacent Rihan checkpoint, at Shaked only those on the list are allowed to pass through, for example the owner of the donkey who crosses over every day, the residents of the lone house, cut off from Nazlet Zaid – their village – by the separation fence.07.25 – Rihan checkpoint: The closure continues. Hardly any traffic. drivers pull up and straight away uncover back, abdomen and ankles, a long way from the barrier, as a “regular” proceeding without the soldiers even needing to instruct them to do so.A female driver requests that her passenger be allowed to stay in the car for the inspection and not walk over to the distant pedestrian inspection point. At first the soldier refuses and orders her to get out and proceed to the pedestrian checkpoint. However we point out to him that she is lame and he consents to the request.
