At 13:00 we call ‘operations’ asking them to come over. The military Jeep arrives within 5 minutes and the soldiers open the gate. Rihan checkpoint – 13:20 Two cars awaits inspection.There are 7 illegal sojourners (people who entered Israel without a permit and now tried to cross back the checkpoint into the west bank) in side the pen, claiming for having been there since09:00. Fifteen minutes after our arrival, four of them are free to go.A fellow holding an entrance permit to Israel, is sent, insensitively, to Jalama.14:00 – The checkpoint is closed, apparently for inside inspection, and is re-opens after half an hour.15:15 – The cp. Commander explain to me in a tone of voice, and impatiently, as if I’m mentally challenged, that – Because these people are Shaba”cheem, the soldiers can detain them for as long as they wish. Which according to my book, is totally wrong, and I call the DCO, asking them to expedite the inspection of the papers of detainees, held in the pen for more than two hours.
