Shavei Shomron, Beit Iba Sunday 18/06/06 PM Observers: Aliya S., Alix W., (reporting) Shavei ShomronOn the way to Beit Iba, we check the north side of Route 57 just below Shavei Shomron and see no sign of road work, we drive towards Shavei Shomron, and here too there is no sign of any machinery or road work. We stop at Jamal’s mini-market, and he tells us that the road work that was going on for about 10 days has stopped; well this is a good sign. Beit Iba 14:37 – There is much more action, movement and confusion here are the entrance, there are much more taxis than we have seen in a while. There are 8 vehicles waiting to enter Nablus, which isn’t too bad, but like one of the drivers says to us, he has already been waiting for an hour at the Anabta checkpoint. There are no detainees, and the pedestrians from the Nablus side are flowing, the women are moving from the humanitarian queue. There is some commotion between a soldier and a driver both standing near the driver’s vehicle. Y. the commander, we recognize from a couple of weeks ago, went running over and intervened calming both the soldier and the driver, he succeeded solving the problem. Y. is a soft spoken gentle man and his presence at the checkpoint makes a difference. Route 55 just east of Jit there are a couple of cars, only on this one side is a machsom.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
