Shekh Saed Monday, 26.06.2006, PMNoa Y., Judy O. Drove to Shekh Saed on the new road to East Talpiot and then along the road to Jabel Mukaber and then to the road block and the soldiers. We walked through the checkpoint under the indifferent gaze of the soldiers. There were a few men sitting near the grocery store. Most of them were drivers within the village for those who come from Jerusalem; the cars are parked near the road block and they then walk through the checkpoint. The men immediately began to tell us about the event of that morning – that about 200 people had been detained and two tried to run away into the wadi – and that two soldiers chased after them, that shots were heard and that an ambulance arrived – and that was it. But then each of the men told us (and all the onlookers showed their agreement) that the whole event had been staged – the military ambulance had been there all the time just around the bend and when the soldiers contacted it, it (the ambulance) had arrived immediately. They said that they had warned the two who had wanted to escape that there were soldiers in the wadi, but the two men had run there anyway, which seems to confirm the idea that it had all been staged. It seemed clear to them that the aim had been to frighten the 150 people (according to this account) that were there. They said that there had not been any machsomwatch presence. But the morning shift reported that they had not been permitted to pass the road block – and told the story as seen from the other side.It seems that it is most important to be present in the morning between 04:30 and 06:30 AM – a time when the most number of people attempt to cross over, when tear gas is often thrown and there is a general terrorizing of the population. We did not continue to Abu-Dis or The Container.
