Shekh Saed
Shekh SaedTuesday,13.06.2006, AM Observers: Yael Y-L, Neta A., Tamar A (reporter)Shekh Saed (The check point between Jabel Mukaber and Sawahre-a-Sharkiya) :06:45-8:50 – About half a kilometer before the checkpoint two members of the BP caught two women, one older, who succeeded to detour the checkpoint, and they are bringing them back. The older woman tries to persuade them to let them pass, but one of the soldiers pushes her back with his hand. When we tell him that he is not allowed to touch her, his friend tells him to let go of her. He does stop, but keeps following them back to the checkpoint.Above the checkpoint they spread some black sheet to shade the area. There are two BP Jeeps and a number of soldiers in front of the checkpoint. A few people come over to be checked, about twenty or thirty are waiting by the houses, most of them further down the road. The soldiers want to prevent us from passing into Shekh Saed, claiming that these are “the territories” and we are forbidden to go there. Neta is detained and they take her ID, but after a phone call to the comander they give it back., and we can go. The commander is irritated and orders his soldiers: “do not take care of them”. A short time later the Jeeps leave the place and only three BP soldiers are left, two by the checkpoint and one more to the right, on the road. Today there are less people than we saw last week. School kids don’t have matriculation exams, and people probably know already that passing here became more complicated, and some give up in advance. From time to time the soldiers, holding shock granade, come over to the first houses, in order to push the people further, but they too soften as time passes.A few women with heavy sacs succeed in passing further, on the side, because the two are busy preventing others from passing. Sometimes they catch them later. But at least once, when they detected the women at the last moment, the soldiers gave up on running after them. One woman just keeps walking when the soldier calls after her to return. At the end he gives up. Few elderly people, women and children are allowed to pass after a short argument. A man carrying a big bag did not want to cross over at all, just to cross from one street to another inside the neighbourhood. He is called for his bag to be checked. He is released quickly.08:50 – We are leaving and looking for the road between Jabel Mukaber and Sawahre a-Sharkiya, which was reported by the observers on Sunday afternoon. First right turn when possible, and keep after a ride on the road the next right turn comes up to the checkpoint. At this turn there is a BPJeep and two detainees beside it.Check point between Jabel Mukaber and Sawahre-a-Sharkiya – The check point is a yellow iron gate behind the security road, and is attached to the wall which, a few tens of meters furthers becoms a fence. Warning signs are hung on the fence: “Life danger. Military zone. Anyone who passes or harms the fence is in mortal danger”. Here there are BP people and security company guards. They have lists of whoever is allowed to pass here. Very few are coming. A teacher on her way to a school in Sawahre-a-Sharkiya is surprised to not find herself on the list. The soldier is ready to let her pass but warns her that she might have problems on her way back. She may have to pass through Zeitim CP. She tells us that this checkpoint is here since september. The Jeep and the two detainees are not where we saw them when we return.
