Qalandiya, Ar-Ram, Sunday, 06/11/05 PMObservers: Tamar F. and Phyllis W. (reporting)Ar-Ram At the CP, a little after 2:30 PM there were four detainees: the driver of a transit from Silwan and three passengers. Amit was filling out the forms. The passengers were willing to swear that they lied to the driver and told him they had passes for Jerusalem but it did not look like this would help. There were no lines of cars and pedestrians.Qalandiya We reached Qalandiya at 3:30 PM. There were almost no peddlers in the square and we were told that this was because of the holiday (Id el Fitr). The heavy flow of pedestrians during the duration of our shift increased towards 5 PM, creating long crowded lines under the shed. Danny, the DCO representative, was busy elsewhere and couldn’t be reached for half an hour. A call to the DCO got him back to the CP where he solved the problem by having the MP unit post another soldier to check the people in the humanitarian line. In ten minutes the traffic jam was released. However, crowding in the men’s line continued. Danny explained that this was due to the fact that there are “only” two magnetometers. The soldiers were not particularly hostile and acted efficiently once they understood what should be done. Apparently the IDF is not prepared for the large numbers of people now passing through the CP with the start of the school year. Perhaps the soldiers should be forewarned as to what will happen towards 5 PM so that they can get ready in time.At 6 PM, when we returned to Ar-Ram we found a long line of vehicles (about 30) progressing slowly towards the CP. There were no pedestrians waiting. However, at the entrance to Beit Hanina we met a 3-man team of BP hunting illegals. The three BP soldiers were waiting, next to their 7 detainees, for a jeep to bring them forms to fill out. A series of phone calls to various BP headquarters did not appear to help. And sometimes, on the individual level, you can find a bit of good news: Fadel, a student of fashion design who studied in Shenkar and in Beit Lehem, graduated with honors and was given a grant to continue his studies in Turkey.
