South Hebron
South Hebron Mountains. Wednesday 19.10.05, AMObservers: YL YT (YT reporting Hebrew,YL reporting in English)Left Shoqet at 6:45. return at 9:30.Summary: heavy presence of Israeli military and police along rt #60. There is no entry or exit of vehicles from the large cities, heavy pedestrian traffic at the places in which passage is allowed for pedestrians. Feelings of frustration and “Not again” among Palestinians.Sansana: beginnings of construction of a permanent checkpoint on the green line. We pass without being stopped.Daharia-Ramadin – the checkpoint is manned, still with Golani soldiers. The soldiers check the papers of the vehicles that pass from one side to the next – one vehicle at a time, alternating sides. The restrictions remain the same: only vehicles owned by Ramdin residents may pass south to Ramadin side. Trucks with special permission may pass. Anyone may pass north to Daharia side. A pickup truck filled with children inside and in the open back (not at all safe) pass northwards to a close by school.Daharia – checkpoint still closed with bricks.Along the road the dirt piles have been heightened. There are places where it is obvious that attempts have been made to cross these dirt piles and move from the villages onto the main road. We see a truck seriously stuck in one such attempt. Taxi drivers informed us that taxis are allowed to drive along rt #60 (without any official paper), however, entering and leaving rt #60 are not allowed. Soldiers confirmed this information.Dura – el-Fawar – vehicles may not cross. very heavy pedestrian traffic. We are told this is because many other usually used crossings are closed to pedestrians too. There are soldiers on the road monitoring the pedestrian traffic, but they are not stopping people and asking for papers. These soldiers have been brought here from a course they are attending, in wake of the killings three days ago.Beit Hagai – two soldiers on the road. Otherwise the place is deserted.Sheep Jct. – sparse pedestrian traffic. Children on their way to school show us a new army post (from yesterday, they say) on top of the hill. Soldiers are occupying a half built home above the jct. on Yata side. The Israeli flag is erected. No soldiers on the road.Shayuch-Sair – many more taxis than usual are waiting for customers on both sides. There is little possibility for work, as there is no way in which the taxi drivers can drive from the one side of the road to the other (usually they drive through East Sair checkpoint, which is not completely closed). However, the taxis that somehow make it to Rt. 60 can drive along it without being taken off the road.East Sair checkpoint: cement blockades are on the road allowing only for monitored passage of vehicles. Each vehicle that has Arab drivers or passengers is checked: all id cards are checked and the cars’ luggage compartment is checked. The passengers are not requested to exit the vehicle. Palestinian taxis are allowed to pass and Israeli cars (Israeli Arab cars are checked). Trucks only with special permits are allowed to pass. While we were there one truck was sent back, and not allowed to pass. There road is completely blocked in the directions of Halhul and Seir (this is usually the only entrance available for cars entering Halhul and Hebron from Jerusalem and Bethlehem. It is very very seldom completely blocked.) Two ambulances’ contents are quickly checked and allowed to speed on to Bethlehem direction.Rt 35Homnitarian checkpoint is open. Soldiers are checking the vehicles, we are requested to show our id cards. Ambulances are allowed in to Hebron. All soldiers seem new to the area, and seem to be doing their job respectfully and efficiently. They are mostly from ongoing courses (field commander course).Halhul-Hebron bridge – completely open to traffic. The soldiers are out of the coca cola factory.Zif jct. the checkpoint is closed. Soldiers on the road.By Karmel and Susia young settlers are waiting on the road for rides. As if nothing happened this week!Kongo checkpoint – again manned by soldiers from commanders’ course. They seem as if they don’t have much work to do.

Ramadin and Arab al-Furijat, were established in the suburbs of Dahariya by Bedouins who came from the Be'er Sheva area after 1948. The village of Ramadin, numbers about 6,000 people, is located on the eastern side of the separation barrier. The checkpoint that was established at the entrance to the village (crossing by list only) to prevent passage to Israeli territory was removed in October 2007, and the road to the Meitar checkpoint leading to Israel is open.
