South Hebron, Wednesday morning, 16.11.05 Observers: Haya H. Dana L. (reports) 6.45 – 10/00We were told not to enter Hebron, so we followed the “usual” track. Not having been on this track for about three weeks, we were shocked to see all the additional means of “restraining” the Palestinians.Ramadin – Soldiers were checking thoroughly every vehicle, but detained no one, though they let a group of teachers wait quite a while for their turn to pass. Dura – El Pawar – opened for vehicles too. Near the roadblock there were many soldiers, but passing vehicles weren’t checked. Sheep Junction – opened only for pedestrians. No soldiers were observed. Rolling Checkpoint, between Shayuch and Kuriat arba – a thorough check-up of vehicles, but ! only two Palestinians were detained while their i.d.s were checked ( a random check-up). Israeli vehicles were allowed to pass freely Some Palestinians told us that the whole situation has deteriorated lately and asked us to report the fact. When we came back to the place ten minutes later, the whole “scene” “evaporated” – no rolling checkpoint, no soldiers and no Palestinians – an empty road… Shayuch – as usual, opened only to pedestrians. Sair – Halhul – the whole junction was completely blocked, as in a siege.. The Humanitarian Junction – soldiers checking every vehicle, but no one was detained while we were there. Zif – passage for vehicles blocked with boulders. Susia – Arad – no detained Palestinians. Road 60 – a lot of traffic. Road 356 – deserted, as usual.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
      2. Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      3. The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox

    • Ramadin and Arab al-Furijat, were established in the suburbs of Dahariya by Bedouins who came from the Be'er Sheva area after 1948. The village of Ramadin, numbers about 6,000 people, is located on the eastern side of the separation barrier. The checkpoint that was established at the entrance to the village (crossing by list only) to prevent passage to Israeli territory was removed in October 2007, and the road to the Meitar checkpoint leading to Israel is open.
