South Hebron
South Hebron, Tuesday, 21/12/04, AMHagit B. and Leah Y. Leah reporting in EnglishWe left Tsomet Shoqet 6:45; returned 9:00A cold, grey day.Route 317: A permanent shelter for soldiers at the Livneh turning – no traffic. At the entrance into Arad, the roadblock is manned – no traffic either. Many children on their way to school, piles of earth alongside: entrance to Samoa istightly blocked. New earth mounds prevent going from Yatta Hirbet Tawani. Zif Junction: The yellow gate is open, taxis are allowed to drive through. We took Hw, the 11 yr. old Palestinian girl from Yatta, and her mother to theTarqomiya Roadblock where Linda was waiting to drive them Tel Aviv for thechild’s medical treatment. Route 35: The Humanitarian Roadblock is closed, no cars; soldiers in the pillbox.Piles of earth and stones are in place as usual. The Halhul Bridge is open to traffic, the entrance from route 35 to the bridge is closed. At the Idna roadblock, the yellow gate is open; soldiers with guns stand beside the pillbox. We were at the Tarqomiya Roadblock at 8:00. The Israeli buses taking Palestinianprisoners’ relatives to visit, were beginning to move. Soldiers said, the buses had been there since 7:10.Route 60: All pillboxes manned: Sair- Shiyuh, Shepherds’ Junction and Dura- El Fawar. No problems entering Route 60, no surprise roadblocks.Crossing into South Beni Naim is allowed, some taxis drive through … three cars with Palestinian number plates … maybe, their right of way will continue? The other cars belonged to the Jewish Settlers. Alongside the main road, Palestinians plough their fields with horses — tractors cannot pass over the earth-mounds. The occupation seems to engender a return to the “pre-machine” age.

Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often, the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
