South Hebron
Southern Hills of Hebron, Monday 20.6, MorningObservers: Hagit B. (Reporting Hebrew), Paula R. (English reporting)06:45 – 09:15Sansana Roadblock – About 10 Palestinians are waiting for their papers to be checked. The people welcome us friendly. Among them a boy in his early teens, tries his luck to cross over for a days work. By the junctions of Dura el-Pawar, Sheep crossing, and Shiuch-Sair there are no soldiers. Traffic flows over the Halhul-bridge. The pillboxes are manned. But all the barriers: The gates, the dirt mounds and the boulders along the sides of the apartheid roads and well into the hills are all being cultivated with care and grow higher and denser all the time. From talking to few people by the junctions, we learn of their constant misery, of unemployment, of patrols of soldiers who, by some caprice, may put some people for an hour or more standing by the wall, for checking… On our way back, by the Zif junction, Hagit (she sees everything) calls my attention to soldiers in the hills, in the territory of the Palestinian Authority. We hesitate before the post sign that indicates that from here we are under Palestinian authority and that joint Palestinian-Israeli patrols may take place. A unit of 4 soldiers, on foot, put a roadblock within that area, clearly not following the sign. A resident from Jerusalem drove back and told us that he tried to get in and attend the funeral of his mother in law and is not allowed in. We asked the soldiers what they were doing, and their answer was: “It’s part of an operational activity”. On our arrival, they were leaving. We returned at 9:15 to Shoket.
