Hebron Hills, Thursday 4/8/2005, MorningObservers: Paula and Shnunit (co-reporting)Sophie (a guest tourist from France)In general, we observed a relative flow of Palestinian vehicles on route 60 and very few military vehicles. Talking with Palestinian taxi drivers at the Shiuch junction; their emphasis was more on the economical hardship, the “situation”, and the hanging question of whether the pullout from Gaza leads to improvements, rather than the daily encounters with the military. Children, in summer camp shirts and caps, cheerfully greeted us with “sabah el-nur”. Our tourist guest marveled at the pastoral surface and the hidden significance. Dahariya: The gate is closed.Carmel: A flying CP, at which 6-7 vehicles wait to pass. Three soldiers, with cocked guns, let them pass without delay. Dura El-Pawar: Open. Cars pass through; a spiked roadblock on the road. No soldiers.Beit-Hagay: A roadblock with soldiers. Their tent is covered with signposts: “Disengagement Harbors Terror”. Our passage was smooth. Sheep Junction: Closed to vehicles. A few pedestrians crossed the road. Shiuch – We stopped a few minutes and talked with the taxi-drivers. One of them recommended to us, in perfect Hebrew, on sightseeing Herodion and wrote to us (in Hebrew) names of tourist guides. He realized that a tourist should see more than the everyday miseries. Halhul Bridge: Open to traffic. A military jeep and soldier looks around. (A quick visit to the glass factory). The Humanitarian Gate: Closed, unmanned. Zif junction: Closed.

    • Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often,  the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
