South Hebron and Hebron , Wednesday 8.2.06 AMObservers: Yael Z. Haya H. Dana L. (reports)06:45 – 10:30Hebron:We were joined by two nice women from Jerusalem. Yael was our “guide”. All places were deserted, though we noticed an increased presence of soldiers and police Were told that there was a dispute between two families the night before. We also found out that the magnometer at the Tarpat Junction was closed until “the key was brought”. The soldiers there refused to answer any further questions. We did the usual “round”, with nothing special to report. South Hebron: The Kongo barrier – 3 soldiers, but nobody wanted to go through . Just before Maon we observed a Jeep and 5 soldiers waiting for those who were seen walking down the hills of Yata. Not far from Zif we observed unidentified caravans were previously there was only an army post. Zif Junction – new concrete barriers all the way to the village and a temporary checkpoint on the road.Shayuch Junction – a road accident of Israeli vehicle. Soldiers and Jeeps were present.East Halhul – completely opened. All the rest of the way was utterly unremarkable.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

    • Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often,  the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
