Tarqumiya
Tarqumiya CP, Thursday, November 23, 2006 AMWatchers: Yeela and Esther (reporting)0505- 0610We arrived at 05:05 AM and on the way from the car to the CP we passed a few workers coming from the CP, which meant that the CP was opened in time – but that there was a only small team of Checkers on Duty. After a few more minutes another team came on duty and the checking was done more quickly and efficiently, especially because of one MP who made sure that the line was checked as efficiently as possible. (I always thought that one person who cares makes a big difference – in any situation). As usual there was a long line of workers. It took 40 minutes for the group at the end of the line who arrived at 5 o’clock to pass the CP. By 5:45 the workers who came waited in line 10-15 minutes. There was no pushing or shoutin g a nd no one had complaints. The workers even told us that the situation was pretty good these days.We think that it is most important to open the CP exactly on time. It saves the situation of the amassing of a long line which becomes difficult to handle efficiently afterwards. That is the reason that we try to be present at the hour of the openin g a t 5:00 , and not just hear the complaints of the workers later on. Perhaps after hearing this so many times some of the officers have accepted this approach and are actin g a ccordingly. It’s especially important now at the beginning of the winter, when the mornings are already very cold. Waiting three quarters of an hour in the cold and the rain without shelter can be terribleWe left just after six o’clock when we saw that the MP’s were doing their job quietly and efficiently and the line of workers had dwindled. The terminal is still under construction – but it doesn’t look as though this winter the workers and the soldiers will have a sheltered place to check and be checked.

The Tarqumiya Checkpoint is one of the largest and busiest checkpoints where people and goods cross into Israel. It is located on the Separation Barrier close to the Green Line, on Road 35 (connecting Beer Sheva and Hebron). It is run by the Israel Defense Ministry’s Crossings Administration with civilian secuirty companies running the day to day operations. The checkpoint is indeed open to vehicles in both directions 24/7, but Palestinians are prevented from crossing in vehicles, except in special cases. MachsomWatch activists visit the checkpoint as it opens at 3:45 am, in order to observe the daily passage of nearly 10,000 Palestinian workers. The workers arrive from throughout the Southern West Bank. Our activists report on the tremendous overcrowding at this checkpoint; they have observed young men climbing and scrambling on the fences and roofs of the ‘access cages’. This is how the work day begins for those who ‘build the land of Israel’. updated November 2019
